Friends of the Greenway

Friends of the Greenway is a community group that has recently formed to support the vision of a "GreenWay" environmental corridor between the Cooks River and Sydney Harbour at Iron Cove. We now have over 80 members, and almost 400 local resident have already nominated themselves as supporters. So now is a good time to join the group which is helping to fast-track implementation of a bush wildlife corridor and to get a GreenWay cycling and walking Trail in place ASAP.

Friends formed in late 2007, with an initial meeting in October 2007 at Cadigal Reserve where an interim Committee was formed followed by the first inaugural meeting on December 2 2007 at Hoskins Park Dulwich Hill

Friends role is to provide support to the GreenWay vision, and to other groups in the area. Friends will get involved in:

  • lobbying government and stakeholders to gain the best possible outcomes for the area an d the Greenway
  • providing a strong community voice as input to publicly exhibited plans etc, submissions to development proposals, and provide a point where the community can interact with Councils and State government for management and coordination in the corridor
  • providing a source of information and guidance to others regarding sustainability, the GreenWay vision, and those that want to know more about their local area
  • supporting like-minded environmental and community groups in the GreenWay region to flourish and be active
  • promoting the greenway corridor and engaging with others at festivals, street stalls and events
  • seeking funding and donations for implementation of greenway initiatives, whether fund raising in own right or assisting other partners to prepare applications

It is not the intention for FoG to undertake actual on-ground work such as bush care, pathway construction for instance, which is currently being done by other groups. But we will be encouraging and facilitating this amongst the corridor partners.

The Structure of Friends is similar to many incorporated community groups. The group has become an incorporated association under the NSW Incorporations Act. The group has adopted the Model Rules of Association under the Act, but with some slight modification regarding membership, voting and access to membership information. Download a copy of the Rules of Association.

The Friends Committee consists of Convenor (Jud Agius) and Secretary (Greg Stonehouse, Treasurer (Claire Sives) and six other Committee Members. The Friends Committee meets once per month, whilst the group as a whole meets roughly every two months as well as getting together at events and festival stalls.

You can get involved in grass roots action in the GreenWay through:

  • looking and reading about the project and be informed via this web site or our E-Newsletter Way 2 Go!;
  • join the Friends or any of the local community groups that are working on GreenWay-related projects; or,
  • supporting your organisation or agency (such as local Council) in their participation in the GreenWay project. For instance, all of the Councils towards the end of each year and the early part of the new year are preparing their budgets and management plans for the upcoming Financial Year. This is a good time to lobby for then to include GreenWay-related projects in budgets and staffing.

As a community project, your support, time and effort are critical for this project to continue. The efforts of grass-roots advocacy in galvanising community action behind a coherent "greenway" project will benefit not only yourselves but some 15,000 residents living along the corridor. The people in involved in the project to date come from all walks from the local community, all contributing to the vitality and success of the project.

To get involved you can send us email or join up with Friends as shown above. Even if you cannot attend any of our events, we can keep you posted on the GreenWay Project progress!
