GreenWay Coordination Strategy & Masterplan

A vital element in progressing the GreenWay vision is to prepare a masterplan or strategy for the corridor. This strategy should jointly involve the participating Councils, State Government, and the local community in its preparation. More effective coordination of other initiatives in the corridor would also be an outcome of such a masterplanning process.

Marrickville Council in conjunction with Leichhardt and Ashfield Councils and the GreenWay Committee in early 2005 submitted an application for State government funding for a coordination strategy under the Metropolitan Greenspace Program (MGP). A MGP grant was awarded December 2005 on the basis of matched funding, with the NSW State Government providing $30,000, the Councils (Marrickville, Ashfield and Leichhardt) providing $10,000 each.

A Project Working Group was formed (key Council, State Government officers and GreenWay Committee representatives) in 2007 to oversee the Coordination Project. The Working Group has met regularly and has undertaken community consultation for the Strategy and development of the Strategy Report. A Project Briefing Paper prepared by the Working Group summarises the project objectives, tasks and resources. Marrickville Council's Transport Planner Kendall Banfield is the Project Administrator, and he can be contacted at: trans@marrickville.nsw.gov.au.

A GreenWay Coordinator was appointed and through 2007 was involved in engaging the community and agency stakeholders in the consultation process, gathering relevant information, and working towards developing a coordination strategy. This also involved community events such as CleanUp Australia day, three "Think Tank" forums/discussions were held and as reported in Way2go newsletter.

The strategy has progressed through 2008 and in early December a Draft Master Plan and Coordination Strategy - working together to build a living corridor was approved by Marrickville and Ashfield Councils for exhibition, once it is considered by Leichhardt Council in early 2009. Following the exhibition period, it is understood that community workshops will be held to publicly discuss the comments received and progress things to the implementation stage (Stage 2) of the Coordination Strategy.

SUSTAIN..
Greenway Sustainability Project Greenway Sustainability Project

Environmental Trust Urban Sustainability Project

The GreenWay has been awarded a $1.83M NSW Environmental Trust grant through the NSW Environmental Trust Urban Sustainability (Major Projects Program) for the Cooks River to Iron Cove GreenWay "Making Sustainability Work" Project". The objective of the project is for the GreenWay to be a best practice model for Sustainability. The grant was one of only 10 awarded from 65 applications from across NSW. You can see news of the grant success at GreenWay News

The focus of the Cooks River to Iron Cove GreenWay "Making Sustainability Work" is the development of a best practice model for sustainable management of a public asset - a Greenway - linking the Cooks River and Iron Cove. The aim is to create a corridor providing a habitat for biodiversity, alternative transport options and a focus for community involvement. The Project will include the development of long-term management guidelines for flora and fauna in the corridor to improve and enhance biodiversity, with an emphasis on providing a habitat for the recently discovered colony of Long Nosed Bandicoot.

A detailed project business plan has just recently been finalised and Ashfield Council as the Project Administrator is now responsible for the selection of Project staff and contractor(s). Please email to friends@greenway.org.au if you would like to participate in the Making Sustainability Work project, or contact the Project Administrator at Ashfield Council: janeneH@ashfield.nsw.gov.au.
