GreenWay Schools

The GreenWay is a local model of sustainability and an excellent outdoor classroom for the 23 primary schools located in the catchment. The Program has now been accredited and can be used across the State for engaging, authentic learning and sustainability education.

The GreenWay Schools Sustainability Program

The GreenWay Primary Schools Sustainability Program offers Inner West primary school students the opportunity to explore their local environment through a series of five Local Environment and History Walks and accompanying activities, which allow students to learn about the Greenway in a fun and interactive way.

The Program has been developed collaboratively with local Inner West teachers, Council officers from Ashfield, Leichhardt and Canterbury Councils, a community representatives and volunteer in consultation with the Department of Education and NSW Sustainable Schools.

The Program:

• Builds on the Environment Program developed over the last 10 years by teachers and parents at Kegworth Public School in Leichhardt;
• Local History and Environment Walks provide students with an authentic learning experience, allowing them to re-connect with each other and with their local environment in an outdoor classroom;
• Provides Stage 2 teachers with a Workbook of 15 cross-curriculum activities, that target key learning areas such as literacy and numeracy, while helping students develop a greater awareness of their local environmental and sustainability and issues;
• Activities are linked to the Curriculum and Outcomes for Stage 2 Key Learning Areas (KLAs) including Creative Arts, Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE), Mathematics, Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) and Science and Technology (SciTech).

The GreenWay Schools Sustainability Program successfully piloted in 2011

The GreenWay Schools Sustainability Program is an exciting local Project that has been successfully piloted in three Inner West primary schools - Summer Hill Public School, Ashbury Public School and Kegworth Public School in Leichhardt during 2011. The Program has been positively evaluated by both the Schools Reference Group and an independent evaluator. 

The GreenWay Schools Sustainability Program in 2012 

Inner West Primary schools have been invited to attend a free Teachers Professional Development day focussed on the NSW teachers accredited course ‘Using the local environment for integration of sustainability education outcomes for Stage 2/3 on Tuesday August 28^th 2012.

The course builds capacity for teachers to use their local environment as a teaching and learning resource. As a result of doing the course, teachers develop greater capacity to integrate sustainability education / outdoor learning activities into their curriculum planning.
