Public art and reading can provide a respite from busy city living and the GreenWay street libraries combine these two pleasures in a colourful way at three sites along the GreenWay.

The project was initiated by the GreenWay Steering Committee in collaboration with the Leichhardt Mens Shed at Canal Road, Leichhardt.  Three libraries have been made by the Mens Shed with recycled wood to specifications developed by the committee, including shelving to accommodate both adult and children’s books.

Artists Alessandro Berini and Adam Galea were commissioned by Inner West Council to embellish each library with unique designs and sculptural elements which reflect the character of the place on the GreenWay where the library will be located

The first library was installed at Café Bones, Hawthorne Reserve in December and the libraries for Lewisham West Light Rail Stop and Johnson Park, Dulwich Hill will follow in March/April.

Anyone is welcome to visit one of our street libraries, have a browse and swap a book, but please make sure you close the door, so the rain doesn’t get in!
